Cinderella Story handed out 77 dresses for graduation proms in 2014

Girls will live a true Cinderella story at their 2015 graduation proms through the work of volunteers who bypass financial barriers to provide prom fashion.

An annual dress drive will launch Jan. 2 as part of First Friday when donations of gently-worn and cleaned prom dresses will be collected at the Painted Cat on Christina Street.

                          Picture : cheap cocktail dresses

"It will be a fun event," said Debbie Anderson, founder of the Cinderella Story of Sarnia-Lambton.

In April, girls in Grades 8 and 12 should be able to choose from several hundred free dresses. The dress drive allows the inventory to be continually updated.

Anderson said financial restrictions can still prevent some girls from attending the social milestone of a prom.

But Cinderella Story's annual Prom Dress Boutique allows some girls to try on 10 to 15 dresses and that experience is important, said Anderson.

Their look can be completed with shoes, a mini-makeover and jewelry during the April boutique.

During the 2014 prom season, 77 girls received dresses from the Cinderella Story's large selection.

But Anderson said the key to the event is that girls are able to participate with their peers, helping them build confidence and making it more than just a dress.

The drive will continue from Jan. 5 to 18 when dresses can be dropped off at Libro Credit Union, Blackburn Radio, Agoya Fitness, Costumes Canada and Sarnia-Lambton Business Development Corporation.

Khloe Kardashian Dons Low-Cut Sequined Dress With Daring Slit

Khloe Kardashian Dons Low-Cut Sequined Dress With Daring Slit

This isn't your average little black dress.

Khloe Kardashian has never been one to stray from a daring dress, and her outfit at 1 Oak nightclub in Las Vegas on Tuesday night was no exception to the rule. The 30-year-old worked her curves in a sequined black dress with a plunging neckline and a thigh-high slit as she played host for the evening:

Kardashian was kept company by her two close pals, Khadijah and Malika Haqq. Although her famous family was not in attendance, she found a creative way to make sure that Kim, Kylie, Kourtney, Kendall and Rob were all there in spirit:

Samantha Jade oozes glamour in dazzling gold dress as she puckers up for the camera after posting touching tribute to late mother

Samantha Jade was resplendent in a dazzling gold dress as she brought the house down with a New Year's Eve performance at the Gold Coast's luxurious five star Palazzo Versace.

Playfully blowing kisses to the camera the 27-year-old looked happy as she kissed goodbye to what has been an emotionally wrought year, following the death of her beloved mother Jacqui in June.

The diminutive pop singer showed off her delicate frame in the mirrored dress with spaghetti straps and a sweetheart neckline, posting the shot to Instagram.

She left a simple message beside the shot: 'Hello 2015!'.

Another image showed the Australian voice on stage, microphone in hand, as she oozed Hollywood glamour her hair styled in retro waves.

Earlier in the evening the positive Up! singer posted a touching tribute to her late mother who lost her battle to cancer in June, leaving behind Samantha, her brothers and father.

Posting an image of a Dalai Lama quote that read: 'The purpose of our lives is to be happy.'

She followed the image with the words: '2014 has been a life changing year. It has taught me a lot, My mum lived by these wise words and my New Years resolution is to truly do the same.'

She also shared the image on Twitter alongside the caption: 'Wise words to live by for the year ahead :) love to everybody x'

After her mother passed away earlier in the year, Sam has vouched to complete her second album which is set for an early 2015 release.

In a touching tribute the Perth local will be dedicating the record to her mother.

The singer, who has been open about her grief after the loss of her beloved mother, revealed her new album will be called  'Angel'.

In October Samantha told Daily Mail Australia: 'The album is definitely dedicated to my mum,' explaining her mother's five-month stay in hospital gave the pair time to bond over her music.

'She actually had a lot of input into it. She was in bed and I was there with her so I went through all the artwork with her, all the ideas for the songs and played her the songs we had.'

Earlier in the month Samantha Jade - who won critical acclaim for her role as Kylie Minogue in the INXS mini-series Never Tear Us Apart - shared a photo with fans on Instagram, showing her jumping into a plunge pool in Bali with her hands in the air on Christmas Day.

The X-Factor 2012 is holidaying with dad, Kevin, her brothers Alex and Thomas and some friends.

Dumped bride makes splash with 'trash the dress'

Shelby Swink has a powerful message: When life throws you a mess, make an even bigger mess.

When her fiancé unexpectedly dumped her five days before their wedding on Nov. 1, Swink, 23, decided to commemorate the day with some unconventional — and colorful — wedding portraits.

"I knew that a pity party was the farthest thing from what I wanted or needed. A few people brought up the idea of trashing the dress, and at first it sounded crazy," Swink said in an e-mail.

The ingredients for a memorable "trash the dress": family, friends, celebratory cigars, champagne and paint — lots of it.

                      Picture : beach wedding dresses

Wallowing was not invited to the party.

Via a phone call from her hometown of Memphis, Tenn., Swink tells USA TODAY Network the inside scoop: "Liz (Hoard, the photographer) wanted to make sure we wouldn't go all out and just throw all the paint in 15 minutes. She wanted to stage it, so it starts formally and everyone slowly loosens up. By the end, everyone is crazy and wild," she says.

The day of the shoot, Swink says, it was freezing. "We were wet with the paint and our fingers were numb, but it was so, so fun to just live in the moment."

Swink says that when her fiancé broke up with her, she felt "numb." They started dating in the beginning of 2011, moved in together in December 2013 and got engaged in March.

While the fame is unexpected, Swink is excited that the photos have empowered others in her situation. "So many people have contacted me telling their stories. I did the photo shoot for myself, not realizing that it would affect others," says Swink.

Her advice: "Everything happens for a reason and when life gives you something you can't handle, just face it head-on."

Same-sex couples seek gay-friendly wedding services

Elizabeth calls her upcoming marriage to Julie, her partner of 12 years, "the amazing moving wedding."

The South Carolina women initially planned to marry in Connecticut, where same-sex marriage has been legal since 2008. They scheduled their wedding around their oldest son's graduation there, on Memorial Day weekend. But when gay marriage bans were struck down closer to home, their plans changed.

"When North Carolina went with the court decision, we thought we would get married there, because that is really close to us," Elizabeth said. "Then South Carolina struck the ban down, and now we are getting married in Columbia, South Carolina. We call it 'the evolution of a wedding.'"

Elizabeth says the decision has left her rushing to plan a wedding far closer to home than expected.

"I made my peace years ago with not having a 'real' wedding — 'real,' in the way you think about Southern weddings in particular: traditional and elaborate," she said. "So we are sort of scrambling to pull this off. It’s fun and exciting, but I think we are overwhelmed in the same way all straight couples are about finding wedding services."

Planning a wedding can be particularly stressful for same-sex couples in traditionally conservative states. Although some states have laws barring businesses from discriminating against gay couples, in many parts of the U.S. inclusive wedding services are still far from ubiquitous.

"I feel like we sort of have to check around," Elizabeth said of her South Carolina community. "Most people within the gay community tend to use word of mouth about who is friendly and who is not."

Whether it involves avoiding outright discrimination or making sure a bakery can provide a cake with two brides or two grooms, the question of how to find gay-friendly wedding services is becoming more and more prevalent.

The issue was brought to the forefront after a barrage of traditionally conservative states saw same-sex marriage bans struck down in 2014. States affected by this year's rulings include North Carolina, South Carolina, Montana, Kansas, Alaska, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Arizona, Idaho, Mississipi, Nevada, West Virginia, Colorado, Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah and Virginia.

Michael Jamrock is the owner of EnGAYged Weddings, which he describes as "the yellow pages for gay weddings." The website functions as a directory of vendors who have been vetted as being gay-friendly, listing everything from flower vendors to photographers and wedding officiants. He said that inclusive vendors are scarce, especially in states that very recently legalized same-sex marriage.

"One of our biggest problems is that we have more couples coming to the website looking for vendors than I actually have vendors to accommodate them," he said.

For example, Elizabeth noted the only South Carolina catering company listed on EnGAYged was in Charleston — two hours from Columbia where her wedding will take place.

Jamrock said this problem exists even in states that have traditionally been considered more liberal, including New York, where he has 200 listed wedding officiants who say they are all completely booked months in advance for services.

Reverend Will Mercer is one of the New York officiants listed on EnGAYged. He said he initially experienced a huge surge in demand for his services after gay marriage was legalized in 2011, but the number of same-sex weddings he officiates has dropped by at least half since then.

"At first there was a massive outpouring of people who were interested in catching up with the long wait they had lived through — sometimes 30 years or more — to have their relationships legally acknowledged," he said. "Since that time, it has become a more mainstream activity and the initial demand dropped off. In addition, with other states acknowledging same-sex marriage, people do not drive to New York to get married."

Couple hold lavish 2nd wedding after guests had to pay to attend their 1st

A penny-pinching bride said an extravagant thank you to her guests who she made pay for their own food on her big day.

Gail Reynolds, 43, and her husband Brian, 44, from Worcester were so hard up that when they decided to get married in May 2003 everyone who wanted to come had to contribute money for the wedding breakfast.

“Every spare penny we had went on our wedding fund. Our clothes came from charity shops and we never went out or even had takeaway,” she said.

Gail, mum to son Ashleigh, now 24, and daughter Libby, 17, began selling Avon products in her spare time to try and raise extra cash. There still wasn’t enough money to pay for the whole reception though, so she and Brian came up with a cheeky plan.

“We honestly didn’t have any choice, we couldn’t really afford to feed our guests,” Gail said. “It felt rude but when we asked if they would mind contributing £10 each everyone was more than happy.”

In fact, realising how hard up they were, the couple’s friends and family started offering to help in all sorts of ways.

“My old boss said we could honeymoon in his Spanish villa, a friend did the flowers and Brian’s sister made our wedding cake,” Gail said. “Their generosity meant so much to us. We had dinner in a local hotel. Although it wasn’t fancy, we had a lovely day.”

After the wedding Gail continued selling Avon products and had so much success it became both her and Brian’s full time jobs. In 2005 the couple sold £1 million worth of products, and that year she gave birth to Rosie, now nine.

“It was a true rags to riches tale,” Gail said. “One minute we could barely afford to buy a burger, the next we could buy the shop!”

Now they were better off, Gail and Brian decided to renew their wedding vows – and say thank you to all those who had attended their first big day.

“One day Brian just handed me a glossy brochure, it was for luxury wedding venues,” Gail said, who now boasts a £7.5 million turnover. “He suggested having our dream wedding – now that we could afford it.”

“No expense was spared. Everyone stayed in the luxury hotel where we had the ceremony. After renewing our vows we had dinner in a room filled with hundreds of white roses and lilies,” she said.

On June 1 last year, Gail got ready in a beautiful bridal suite, she was wearing an £800 gown and they cut a wedding cake that cost £250 and short wedding dress. And of course this time, they splashed out for a lavish dinner for their guests.

“It was the wedding of my dreams but our first will always be special to me,” Gail said. “I really found out who our friends were and I feel very lucky to have them in my life.”

Obama’s golf game boots bride and groom from Hawaii wedding

 For birdie or for worse.

President Obama’s golf game Sunday forced Army Captains Natalie Heimel and her fiancé, Edward Mallue Jr. to relocate their wedding ceremony.

The lovebirds were set to wed Sunday at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course, located on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, until they learned Obama had his eye on the same course and they would need to find a new spot for their nuptials.

“In less than 24 hours they had to change everything they had planned,” the groom’s sister told Bloomberg News.

Instead, they held the ceremony on green lawn on the base that offered views of the Pacific coastline.

                      Picture : lace wedding dresses

Obama spent most of the afternoon on Sunday at the base golf course, in the company of golf partners Mike Ramos, Greg Orme and Bobby Titcomb.

But upon learning how the scheduling snafu interrupted the military wedding, Obama reached out to the bride and groom to apologize.

The gesture seemed to smooth over any hard feelings.

"Obama just personally called my sister & her new husband to apologize for foiling their wedding venue golfing. Amazing!" the bride's sister tweeted, posting an Instagram shot of the newlyweds chatting with the President on their iPhone.

Several other wedding guests also shared social media snaps of the incident, using the hashtag #ThanksObama.

The President has spent nine days in Hawaii for his holiday break.

He has golfed six times so far.

Soldiers Relocate Wedding to Accommodate Obama's Golf Game

Natalie Heimel and her fiancé, Edward Mallue Jr., a pair of captains in the Army, were walking from their wedding rehearsal on Saturday at the 16th tee box at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in Hawaii when they were informed they'd have to move their wedding, scheduled for the next day.

President Barack Obama wanted to play through.

It was the second time that day that the couple heard from the nation's commander in chief, whose affinity for golf has, at times, caused political headaches for the White House. Stationed in Hawaii and knowing the president spends his Christmas holiday on the islands, they invited him to their ceremony on a lark. They had received a letter earlier on Saturday saying Obama regretted he couldn't come and wishing them happiness on their wedding day.

“It was kind of ironic they got the letter from them and then, within hours, they were told they had to be moved due to him,” Jamie McCarthy, Mallue's sister, said in an interview. “It was emotional, especially for her—she’s the bride and in less than 24 hours they had to change everything they had planned.”

The golf course, located on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, is a regular stop for Obama when he's in the state, with the Ko’olau Mountains framing the front nine and majestic views of Pacific coastline spanning the back nine. It's also a favorite spot for Mallue, a golfing enthusiast.

                       Images : Wedding Dresses Online

Still, anyone planning an event at the course when the president may be in town is warned about the potential for last-minute shuffling, said Naile Brennan, manager of K Bay Catering, which was handling logistics for the wedding. Brennan said they had other sites ready to go, and the couple ended up choosing the lush, green lawn near the home of Colonel Eric Schaefer, the commanding officer of the base, which offers an elevated view near the 16th hole.

“It's much prettier and much nicer venue unless you're an avid golfer,” Brennan said. “It's more secluded and there are no golfers yelling, 'Fore!'”

An administration spokesman referred questions about the day to the military base, and it's not clear the White House would have been informed about the wedding in advance. After Bloomberg Politics inquired about the scheduling conflict, Obama put in a personal call to the bride.

“He apologized and congratulated them,” McCarthy said, adding that it was a “wonderful talk.”

“We were all there, it was perfect,” she said. “Made their day.”

Malema wedding festivities continue

Two cattle were slaughtered in the early hours of this morning for the matrimonial ceremony.

Malema (33) tied the knot with accountant and newly-found girlfriend Mantwa Matlala (24) during a traditional wedding held yesterday at Matlala’s home.

Matlala’s family are expected to bring gifts for Malema’s family to signify the completion of the vows.

Guests have started arriving for the big occassion.

Speculation is rife that one of the guests include Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

While some politicians and businesspeople had easy access to the festivities yesterday, the community and journalists were kept at bay by Malema, who enforced that it was Matlala’s family decision that no media should be allowed at the wedding.

Strictly, a measure has been put in place to control the influx of the media at the wedding with only two photographers accredited to take wedding pictures.

Several people who spoke to The Citizen described Matlala as a “Christian woman”.

The wedding is scheduled for 2pm.

She swore off men when her tumultuous romance with French Montana came to an end.

And Khloe Kardashian - who separated from her husband Lamar Odom a year ago - has now admitted she's happy being single because she craves male companionship rather than physical intimacy.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star discusses how being married has changed her outlook on dating in a new interview with British Cosmopolitan.

She told the new issue of the magazine: 'I don't crave sex... I crave companionship - I just want to cuddle.'

The feisty brunette says her positive outlook helped her get through the past year as she watched her dreams of a fairytale romance fall apart.

The star - who is an auntie to her sister Kim Kardashian's daughter North, 18 months, and Kourtney Kardashian's children Mason, four, Penelope, two, and baby Reign - was particularly upset the breakdown of her marriage has meant she hasn't been able to start a family yet.

Bride-to-be dresses up for wedding photo shoot

A video has captured the moment a bride who thought she was wearing a wedding gown for a photoshoot discovered that she was actually dressed up for her big day.

The bride-to-be, Christina, thought she was only at the Mall of Georgia in Buford with a photographer friend to pose for a bridal project but wept as she learned that her loved ones were there as well - and waiting for her to walk down the aisle.

The start of the video shows Christina wearing a wedding dress and with her hair and makeup finished perfectly as she is led through the mall and outside to a large Christmas tree.

As she prepares to pose for photographs, she is led around the tree - and is stunned to see her father Michael waiting for her, dressed in a tuxedo and with a bunch of flowers.

He tells her: 'You're getting married today.'

Overwhelmed, she hugs him and wipes away tears, before he whisks her back around the tree to see her crowd of waiting guests and her fiance, Brian - the man behind the plan.

Her father walked her to the end of the aisle, which was marked by the standing crowd, and led her towards the man she was about to marry as her bridesmaids cheered.

With Christina still wiping away her tears, the couple were married and celebrated with their friends.

The video, which was shared to YouTube on Tuesday, also contains footage taken by a drone above the crowd.

It shows the crowd rushing into place in the square before she is pulled back around the tree.

'Meet Brian and Christina and their Surprise Flash Mob Christmas Wedding,' the video's creator, Chris Green, wrote on YouTube.

'Christina, who is engaged, got in her wedding dress because she thought she was at the mall to do a favor for a photographer friend working on a special bridal project.'

The wedding dress good enough to eat

LYNETTE Stokie’s wedding dress looked so good you could eat it — and her guests did just that. But it wasn’t the bride’s actual gown they chowed down on.

Ms Stokie’s friend and baker extraordinaire Belinda Hibbert made a nine-layer chocolate mud cake copy of the dress for the 27-year-old and her new husband, Johnny.

The masterpiece was made to scale, weighing in a whopping 60kg, and was so accurate guests at the August wedding thought it was the bride’s back-up dress.

The cake contained more than 100 eggs, 7kg of butter, 15L of milk, 7kg of flour, 7kg of sugar, 1kg of butter and 11kg of marshmallows.

It was covered in 8kg of icing and airbrushed with apricot colouring to match Ms Stokie’s gown.

Most of the cake was edible — all but the bust and tulle material draped over the skirt.

Ms Stokie said the creation tasted as good as it looked.

Ms Hibbert said it took her about a week to make and she put up to 18 hours of work in each day in her “cake studio” — her Pakenham kitchen.

“I knew it was going to be a challenge, but I enjoyed it,” she said.

The baker said delivering the mammoth cake was almost as stressful as making it.

Three people were needed to lift the treat into a lined van, where it was tied down by its base. It was then driven almost an hour to the wedding venue — Tatra Receptions in the Dandenong Ranges — where the four groomsmen were waiting to carry it inside.

Ms Stokie said she was blown away: “It’s overwhelming to think somebody would put so many hours into something just for my wedding.”

Karrueche is refusing to let Chris’ games get to her head, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t disgusted by Amber grinding on her former man in an L.A. nightclub. Karrueche actually ‘thinks less of Amber’ because of it, HollywoodLife.com has learned EXCLUSIVELY. Friends should never date their friends exes, and certainly not dirty dance with them either! Karrueche is reportedly disgusted by Amber’s behavior, a source close to Karrueche tells EXCLUSIVELY. Karrueche Tran: Disgusted By Chris Brown & Amber Rose Twerking Images : beach wedding dresses Poor Karrueche, 26, saw the video of Amber, 31, and Chris, 25, grinding on each other and thought it was “way out of line.” “Karrueche thinks less of Amber and thinks she’s way out of line for grinding on her dude like that. You’d never catch Kae flirting with Wiz [Khalifa] or anyone Amber’s slept with. Kae is a real classy woman, unfortunately, she can’t say the same for others.” We don’t think it’s right Amber went behind Karrueche’s back either, but it seems like above anything Amber is just out on the prowl! However, we told you that if Chris falls for Amber, then Karrueche, 26, is “done with him forever” — and that will hopefully teach Chris a lesson, too! Karrueche Tran Has A Right To Be ‘Worried’ About Chris Brown & Amber Rose Amber is on the hunt for a new man after her split with Wiz. She’s not saying she doesn’t love him or that she doesn’t want to be with him, but she just isn’t falling for his games,” a source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. Good for her! We’re so glad she’s not letting Chris’ behavior dictate her life or her emotions. And she’s not too concerned with Amber. In fact, Karrueche thinks Wiz Khalifa‘s ex is just “thirsty.” “As far as Amber is concerned, Karrueche isn’t mad at her. If Amber’s that thirsty and wants to sleep with Chris, she can go ahead, he’s all hers. But if Chris falls for Amber, Karrueche will be done with him. She’ll be completely done and will never speak to him again!” We certainly don’t want that to happen. So hopefully, Chris doesn’t fall for Amber. Karrueche Tran Has Lost Respect For Amber Rose Regardless, Karrueche has lost a lot of respect for Amber. “Karrueche thinks less of Amber and thinks she’s way out of line for grinding on her man like that. You’d never catch Karrueche flirting with Wiz [Khalifa] or anyone Amber’s been with. Karrueche is a real classy woman, but unfortunately, she can’t say the same for Amber,” our source adds. Whoa! 9 Things Your Bridesmaids Want You To Know

They've always been there for you, and as you're planning your wedding, you'll likely need their help more than ever.

Here's how to stay in tune with your best girlfriends and keep them happy.

1. They want you to tell them your expectations: What do you expect from your bridesmaids? Will simple moral support suffice, or do you expect them to be there with you throughout all the decision-making and to-dos, like addressing wedding invitations and tying tiny ribbons around your wedding favours? Either way, let your bridesmaids know what you expect of them so that you don't end up frustrated with a friend who doesn't understand (or didn't know) what you wanted them to do in the first place.

2. They want you to tell everyone about them: The only thing worse than a coworker who thinks she's invited to your wedding is a friend who assumes she's going to be a bridesmaid. Let it be known whom you've chosen so that neither you nor your bridesmaids feel awkward about it around non-bridal party members. If you're afraid of hurting someone's feelings, remember that, as cliche as it sounds, any true friend will understand whatever decision you ultimately make.

3. They want you to have your dream wedding: Try not to make hasty assumptions. Don't write off some friends simply because you think they don't have enough money to afford that designer bridesmaid dress you have your eye on. While it is important to recognize your bridesmaids' financial situations, they want you to be happy on your wedding day (just like you would of them), so don't be shy about opening up the conversation and letting them know what would make you happiest.

4. They want you to respect their responsibilities: As you're allocating responsibilities, be mindful of their personal lives -- your friend who's trying to make partner at her law firm or who's dealing with a new baby may not have time to assist you with every little task. At the same time, you don't want to cause discord within the wedding party if some maids feel the others aren't pulling their weight. Try to keep a good balance, and remember, there are others who can help out: You've got your parents, other family members, and your fiance. Plenty of people are willing to pitch in, so take advantage of it as you need to.

5. They want you to dress them well: If you know one of them would be uncomfortable in the dresses you envision, come up with a compromise. Not sure one dress will work for all your girls? Come up with guidelines (say, a colour and length you like) and then let them choose the exact style. Trust us, even with different necklines or sashes, they'll still look fantastic. Remember, you want each and every one of your maids to feel beautiful (and comfortable!), so your efforts in the dress department are well worth it.

6. They want you to put yourself in their shoes: Yes, part of the bridal party's job is to be your go-to gals when you need something done. But no, that doesn't mean you should be cracking the whip nonstop. Whenever you're asking one of your maids to do something -- whether it's attending your gown fitting or tying 100 miniature bows around 100 favour boxes -- stop and think: Would I do this for her? It's a good reality check to keep your requests reasonable.

7. They want you to keep them in the black: They have to shell out for quite a bit over the course of the wedding: dresses, hair, shower and wedding gifts, the bachelorette party, and travel expenses. These add up and can put a pinch on even the most financially flush of maids. Take this into consideration and offer help when you can. For example, you can let them know that they shouldn't feel pressured to give you an extravagant shower gift, or if you're having more than one shower, tell them that you don't expect multiple shower gifts. You can also help them track down inexpensive flights or hotel rooms.

8. They want you to make their to-do list manageable: Try to come up with a game plan beforehand of who you need to do what on the wedding day. Then make a second mental list of who else can and has offered to help -- aunts, cousins, ushers, and so on. When little things do come up (which they will), you'll be able to rely on that latter team to help you take care of details as needed rather than overextending your bridesmaids.

9. They want you to stay their friend: Obvious, right? Sometimes when you're caught up in wedding-related drama, it can be hard to remember that there's a world outside your wedding. When you meet up with one of your girls, make a point to talk about things that are not related to the wedding. Whether it's the project she's working on at work or the blind date she went on last weekend, she'll appreciate the opportunity to tell you all about it, the same way she always has. Similarly, when you're really upset -- whether about the wedding or anything else -- you'll know she'll be there for you, right now and long after the wedding is over.

10 Things You Didn't Know About Being A Bridesmaid

If you're a rookie bridesmaid, or someone who has done this more times
than they can count, here are 10 things nobody has ever told you about
being a bridesmaid.

No one teaches you how to be a bridesmaid. Sure, you can scour wedding message boards or highlight the pages of a bridesmaid survival guide.

You learn what not to do by watching the movie Bridesmaids, or you can ask a veteran bridesmaid for a few quick tips. But you may find yourself running away from the chiffon and right towards the champagne.

If you're a rookie bridesmaid, or someone who has done this more times than they can count, here are 10 things nobody has ever told you about being a bridesmaid.

It's expensive (but it doesn't have to be): When it comes to spending money on the bridal shower or bachelorette party, express budget limitations to the maid-of-honor early on.

You can make the wedding weekend a mini-vacation: Once your bridesmaid duties come to wrap, make a vacation out of the rest of the weekend, especially if you're traveling to a new destination.

Your body is a wonderland that'll accumulate some damage throughout the wedding adventure: Thing week-long blisters that cling to your toes, headaches that linger past the "morning after," and exhaustion that a spa day can attempt to cure.

75 percent of being a bridesmaid means being the life of the party: A main chunk of your responsibilities as a bridesmaid is making sure the bride, and her guests are breaking it down on the dance floor and having a memorable time that'll shine through each Instagram photo.

The other 25 percent of being a bridesmaid means being the bride's personal assistant: You may have been her sidekick in middle school and her wing woman in college, but now, you'll take on the role of her personal assistant. Making last minute trips to the drugstore for eyelash glue, helping her lick her wedding envelopes shut, and being her DIY centerpiece muse.

It's a good excuse to play dress up and get pampered: What better way to justify spending a morning getting your hair and makeup done than celebration of a close friend tying the knot?

You'll learn how to be less selfish and more selfless: As a bridesmaid, you'll do things you don't love, like smiling for a thousand photos, dancing with a groomsmen who smells like tequila, or give a speech at the rehearsal dinner.

It's also your time to shine: Being a bridesmaid gives you the chance to do what you do best. Maybe you're a crafty person who can help with DIY projects. If you're organized, you can help with the to-do list. If you're the comedic one in the bunch, you can call the bride regularly to help her de-stress.

Always a bridesmaid doesn't mean every wedding you go to is the same: Every bride, every venue, every group of people is dynamic. Your 13th time as a bridesmaid can feel like your first.

You'll have an unforgettable time: Whether you tripped down the aisle, or the bride morphed into a last minute bridezilla, or because you spent the night slow dancing with a groomsmen who looked like Brad Pitt — a girl can only dream.

Marathon bombing survivor in 'Yes to Dress' finale

The Boston Marathon bombings took Rebekah DiMartino’s leg, but they couldn’t rob her of her joy as a new bride.

Her sometimes faltering search for the perfect wedding dress — trying on designer gowns while balancing on crutches — is featured in Friday night’s season finale of TLC’s popular reality show, ‘‘Say Yes to the Dress.’’

Last month, after 30 surgeries for injuries she suffered in the April 2013 bombings at the marathon finish line, doctors amputated her left leg below the knee.

DiMartino, 27, since has been outfitted with a prosthetic limb and is training to run the 2015 Boston Marathon.

The finale of ‘‘Say Yes to the Dress’’ captures her using crutches for balance as she tried on wedding dresses at Kleinfeld, an upscale New York City bridal salon.

DiMartino, whose maiden name was Gregory, was watching last year’s marathon when the first of two bombs exploded a few feet away. Her son, Noah, now 7, and her then-boyfriend, Pete DiMartino, also were hurt.

The couple wed last spring in Asheville, North Carolina, and now lives in the Houston area.

Her appearance follows the show’s typical format, following a bride-to-be as she hunts for the dress of her dreams. But for DiMartino, standing long enough just to try one on was a feat in itself.

‘‘Actually trying on the dresses was one of the most physically exhausting things I have ever done,’’ she said. ‘‘I almost passed out from the sheer pain quite a few times, but I was determined not to let it stop me.’’

The couple was chosen for a ‘‘dream wedding contest’’ organized by TheKnot.com, a wedding planning website. Visitors to the site helped choose DiMartino’s dress, a fit-and-flare Sophia Moncelli dress, as well as the couple’s rings and the venue for the nuptials, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville.

‘‘It’s weird to say that it felt normal because of the cameras, but it was nice to concentrate on something other than my leg at that point,’’ DiMartino said of filming the show’s finale. ‘‘Everyone was thinking about how my leg was doing, how many more surgeries and all that, so it was nice to focus on getting married and picking out a dress.’’

A suspect charged in the bombings, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, goes on trial Jan. 5. His older brother, Tamerlan, was killed in a shootout with police after the attacks, which killed three people and injured more than 260.

‘‘This has made me so much more appreciative of every single day,’’ DiMartino said. ‘‘It’s a reminder that our days are not promised to us. I've been given a second chance at life and I'm not going to waste it.’’

Wedding officiants-for-a-day are put on hold

Add the possibility of a wedding backlog to the long list of things that Charlie Baker will have to contend with when he becomes governor next month.

The change in administration is about to bring about a temporary freeze on the special licenses required for a friend or family member to perform wedding ceremonies in Massachusetts. Starting Friday, those hoping to be officiants-for-a-day will have to wait until Jan. 8 to apply for permission to help a happy couple say, “I do.”

“That will probably be one of the few backlogs that I actually solve in a relatively short period of time,” Baker said this week.

In addition to fixing budget shortfalls and considering criminal pardons, the governor’s office also approves applications for what is called a “one-day marriage designation.”

“In the larger context of a lot of things I’ll be worrying about, that is certainly something I look forward to doing,” Baker said.

And there are a lot of them — 5,100 so far this year, according to the state, which estimates getting about 14 applications a day on average.

“I’ve had friends who have actually been the one-day designee for a variety of marriages over the years,” he said. “The idea that you can set something up in such a way that people have a chance to bring a friend or a colleague or a loved one into the ceremony, I think is a really neat opportunity.”

Governor Deval Patrick’s office said the freeze is needed to make sure all pending applications are processed before Baker takes over next month and none fall through the cracks during the handoff. The plan is to brief whoever assumes this role to make sure he or she can take over the job immediately.

“We are committed to ensuring a smooth, transparent, and efficient transition,” said a statement from Patrick’s office.

News of the freeze seems to have gone under the radar, catching some wedding planners off guard. Thank goodness, they said, this is not high wedding season, or the temporary freeze might ratchet up wedding-planning anxiety.

“I’ve planned weddings for over 15 years and feel I have my ear out to all weddings news, and haven’t yet heard of this,” said Dustin Rennells, of Dustin Rennells Design in Boston.

For Massachusetts couples, January weddings tend to take place somewhere warm and sunny, according to the experts. Still, there are those who walk down the aisle in the dead of winter. In 2013, for example, there were five weddings officiated by people with a one-day pass in January, compared with 349 in May, state figures show.

And if one of those five people were a client of Amy Kimball’s who hadn’t gotten their application processed by now, Kimball said she would be a nervous wreck.

“As a planner, if the designated person didn’t have a license two weeks in advance, or three weeks in advance, to make this legal, I would be beside myself,” said the owner of Boston-based Kimball Events.

Kimball said she always asks whoever is officiating — if not a justice of the peace, member of the clergy, or an elected official — to apply “as far as out as they can . . . because the nightmare would be to have them officiate and not have it legal.”

According to the application, someone looking to marry a friend or family member in Massachusetts must petition the governor to “designate me to solemnize a particular marriage.” They must explain why they were selected and must have a letter of reference “attesting to the applicant’s high standard of character” written by someone other than the future spouses.

It was former governor Michael Dukakis who signed the special designation into law in 1990. Before that, individual couples had to file a special bill with the Legislature to have a friend or family member preside over their nuptials. Since then, popularity in the daylong pass has skyrocketed, jumping some 64 percent from 2010.

Rennells said he works with many weddings that some would consider alternative, such as gay and lesbian couples, non-religious couples, or interfaith couples wanting to keep religion out of the ceremony.

“Therein, the only logical source is a friend or family member who can perform a meaningful ceremony on their behalf,” he said. “For those couples, specifically, there may not be another option.”

For those who find themselves stuck in application limbo, Rennells and others have this advice: Go ahead with the wedding as planned, focus on the love, and get to a justice of the peace as soon as possible.

La. baker recreates Hank Williams wedding cake for film

Faye Fair has been in the baking business for 39 years, but a recent order really took the cake.

She was hired to recreate the elaborate wedding confection served at country music legend Hank Williams and Billie Jean Jones Eshliman’s 1952 New Orleans wedding for the movie “I Saw the Light.”

The movie, which wraps production in Shreveport on Friday, stars British actor Tom Hiddleston — best known for his role of Loki in the Marvel Studios film “Thor,” “The Avengers” and “Thor: The Dark World” — as Williams. Maddie Hasson stars as Shreveporter Billie Jean, who married another country music star, Johnny Horton, after Williams death.

Picture : Plus size wedding dresses

Fair was hired for the job upon the recommendation of the film’s assistant prop master, Hannah Roark, who knew Fair because her mother took cake decorating classes from her.

“I knew that she could handle anything we threw at her,” Roark said.

And what they threw at her was no joke, as Roark said.

A photo of the original wedding cake shows a gaudy, three-layer cake with a fluted tower and wedding topper.

Why go to the trouble to duplicate that look?

“We’re trying to be as authentic as possible in every aspect of shooting,” Roark said.

That meant hours of study for Fair as she tried to figure out how to recreate the cake using only poor quality black-and-white photographs as guides. Actually making the cake took two weeks.

The finished cake consists of an 18-inch layer bottom, 14-inch layer middle and 10-inch layer top with a tower and wedding topper. The total creation is 44 inches tall.

Only the middle layer of the cake was real so the actors could cut and eat it for the wedding reception scene. When Fair returned the disassembled cake to her shop, she added a dummy middle layer so she can keep it for display.

The most difficult part was creating the tower, which Fair believes was made of puff pastry on the original and which she recreated in Styrofoam.

Another roadblock: finding the vintage decorative items, such as the bride and groom wedding topper.

“They don’t make them anymore, so we had to take one that we could find and actually take it apart and put it back together with what we thought it would look like back then.”

Fair said the cake was a $2,000 job, but she charged less in exchange for being able to stay on set while the scene was filmed. Although there was a bit of confusion when she arrived with the cake, she was able to sit near the back of the Municipal Auditorium during filming from 2-8:30 p.m. Nov. 21.

And it’s a good thing she stayed.

“It ended up they needed me three times during the course of the day. They had a beautiful spotlight on my cake all day long. The roses on this row kept falling off because it’s real icing and real cake. So I’d run down and I’d fix it and then I’d go back and sit down.”

The minor mishaps didn’t tarnish the experience.

“The director thanked me profusely for actually copying that period of wedding cake and told me how good a job I did,” Fair said.

And Fair couldn’t say enough nice things about Hiddleston.

“He stayed in room where the cake was and when I went down to dissemble it so I could take it off the table, he shook my and my husband’s hand and he told me how pretty the cake was and how good it tasted. I thanked him for actually eating it. He sat down at the table and actually ate his piece of cake. I told him ‘I’m so sorry I haven’t seen any of your movies, but I’m buying this one when it comes out.’ He’s so sweet. He’s a really nice person.”

Fair wishes the film premiere, expected to be in sometime in 2015, would be at the Municipal Auditorium.

“I just think it would give everyone a little glam in their life,” she said.

But one thing she’s sure of: “I’ll be there the first day that it’s out.

“I think I’m going to be nervous because the roses fell off and, of course, I strive for perfection. But I’m going to be excited because I got to be a part of something.”

A wedding date to remember - or at least one he CAN remember

It's rare. It's orderly. And when it comes to remembering an anniversary date, it's as easy as 12/13/14.

Saturday's December 13, 2014, represents the last sequential calendar date for at least 20 years (Jan. 2, 2034) and another 89 years if waiting for Jan. 2, 2103.

If a person has a heart set on commemorating the next 12/13/14, make sure that heart can stand another 100 years on earth to make it to Dec. 13, 2114.

For cryogenic fans, it's 1,000 years until 3014.

                       Picture : WEDDING DRESSES AUSTRALIA

A sequence comes sooner for math nerds with pi. The day is mere months away on March, 14 (Get it? 3.1415 ....)

The dates represent a lucky list of number for some gamblers and certainly a memorable birth date for others.

Lottery players looking for a bit of extra luck love these kinds of quirky number combos.

On Sept. 11, 2002, the winning numbers in New York State's Pick 3 game were 9-1-1. A total of 5,631 people picked the winning sequence; the combination was picked so many times, the numbers were closed out.

Maura McCann, a spokeswoman for the New Hampshire Lottery, said they anticipate selling more tickets on sequential or repetitive dates such as 12/12/12, but notes that lottery players get inspired by all sorts of things. In 2005, more than 100 winners of a secondary $100,000 Powerball prize played numbers linked back to the numbers in a single fortune cookie

Lottery players, kind of in a nutshell, are superstitious,' McCann said.

The numbers mean less in Las Vegas sports betting books.

In horse racing , it would mean an unusual number of horses would have to run to take a ticket on 12, 13, 14, said John Avello, the director of the race and sports operations at the Wynn hotel-casino.

A roulette wheel stands to be the more likely destination for a gambler looking to chance it with the date, he said.

For many others in Las Vegas, they will take a chance by making a date for a spouse.

The Viva Las Vegas wedding chapel plans to marry 120 couples Saturday starting with Egyptian-themed nuptials followed by weddings with a touch of Tom Jones, gangsters, Liberace and, of course, Elvis, said general manager Brian Mills. The number is on pace with July 7, 2007 (7/7/7) but far from the 230 weddings the chapel performed for November 11, 2011 (11/11/11).

Nevada's Clark County marriage license bureau issued its most 'numerically-interesting' certificates — 4,333 — in the four days leading up to July 7, 2007, — more than half of what it typically issues in an entire month..

November 11, 2011 brought in 3,300 new marriage licenses. Oct. 10, 2010 was close behind with 3,090. Expectations at the agency were high for Saturday.

Higher still, the 550-foot-tall High Roller observation wheel on the Las Vegas Strip had signed up about 80 couples so far for its free 12/13/14 ceremonies aboard the ride starting at 10:11 a.m. through 12:13 p.m.

Among them, Brandi Carrow, 37, who just three weeks prior eloped in Reno at the Chapel of the Bells.

This wedding is for her dad, Richard, who, wanting to see his daughter get married, convinced Carrow and her husband to do a re-do of sorts to renew their already fresh vows high above Las Vegas.

'We are so nervous,' said Carrow of the hub-bub of a wedding in front of the entire city, not to mention her father and step-mother.

Oh, and Carrow is also 'scared to death of heights.'

So which anniversary date will they celebrate?

Both, she said.

'Who gets married and then gets to go to Vegas and get the chance to re-do it,' she said, let alone on 12/13/14.

Clinic gets Mary to nephew’s wedding despite advanced cancer

Dr. Jacob Gelberg's way of relieving severe breathing problems from fluid build-up in patients with advanced cancer is in some ways helping them get through their bucket lists.

"We don't cure cancer," said Gelberg, who runs a specialized clinic at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton.

"We help patients at the end of their journey to have a quality of life, control of their symptoms and to give them comfort and independence."

The Pleural Spaces Clinic also helps with "their so-called bucket list in that it gives them more time at home with family and friends, which is what most people want," he added.

At the clinic, staff insert small catheters in patients with advanced lung, breast, and ovary cancers, and lymphoma for less frequent and painful draining of built-up fluids some of them experience in the chest cavity.

The tunneled pleural catheter frees up patients from having to carry cumbersome bags collecting the fluid or from often having to spend about 10 days at a time in hospital to drain the fluids. With this catheter, the draining is done at home by visiting nurses.

Stoney Creek lung cancer patient Mary Wiebe, 82, appreciates that.

Her nephew's wedding in Winnipeg was on her bucket list. The pleural catheter works so well she and her husband flew out last month to attend it.

"Just being there was very special," she said. "And it really surprised people that we were able to make it, thanks to these folks (at the clinic)."

Wiebe is one of about 80 patients since the clinic opened in 2013 to get the pleural catheter. She was diagnosed with lung cancer on July 4 and has had the pleural catheter since July 30.

recommended : wedding dress at Australia

The built-up fluid around her lungs, which makes it very difficult to breathe, is drained three times a week at home by a visiting nurse.

"I have no change in my lifestyle" as a result, Wiebe said.

Her husband, Jack, 86, said his wife's pleural catheter has helped them spend more time at home together.

It takes about five minutes to drain the fluid, an accumulation of a half to a litre of fluid each time, Gelberg said. In 50 per cent of patients, the fluids dry up completely after using the pleura catheter, he said.

Patients used to have to be admitted to hospital to have a tube inserted to drain the fluid. "It was quite painful…"

Advanced cancer patients often have less than a year left to live so under the old way, "they'd have to spend significant time in the hospital, which they don't want. They want to be at home with their families."

The pleural catheter gives patients a sense of control over their lives, Gelberg said. "I had a patient who wanted to go for a bike ride with her partner and now was able to do it."

Its use also reduces hospital admissions and stays, making room to shorten wait times for other procedures, he said.

Similar pleural clinics exist in Toronto, Ottawa and Kitchener. The goal is to develop them across Ontario, Gelberg said.

New Tools for Wedding Photographers

Smartphone cameras have turned wedding guests into an army of photographers at the edge of pews, falling into the aisle — often in the way of the professionals — to get what the Manhattan-based wedding photographer Brian Dorsey calls “the killer shot.”

So Mr. Dorsey always makes sure to get a shot of the shooters. “It’s a reflection of the times, and part of the story these days,” he said.

To accommodate smartphone photos, many couples post Twitter and Instagram hashtags at the reception at the entry table.

Even the bride and groom can be behind the camera. For her April 2013 wedding in Austin, Tex., Stephanie Wonderlin tucked a GoPro camera into her bouquet. She secured it in florist’s foam with wire. “It was unique, and gave the bride’s view — my view — of walking down the aisle,” she said.

At another GoPro wedding, the groom wore the device in his breast pocket. (A joke after the footage was shown was that it was the “cleavage cam.”)

Drones provide another creative point of view, said Aaron Oberdick at B &H Photo in Manhattan.

“They have become very popular within the past few months,” he said, noting the increased sales in the cameras, which require Federal Aviation Administration permission for use by professional photographers.

Les Dorr, an F.A.A. spokesman, said the agency had received 159 petitions since June to allow unmanned aircraft and has granted 9. He said that by the end of the year, the agency may allow expansion of its rule for use in only “tightly controlled, low-risk situations.”

Even professionals, like the California-based wedding photographer Josh Newton, will skip the high-tech camera equipment and use an iPhone in a burst of creativity.

Mr. Newton, who had already packed up his gear, grabbed his iPhone and snapped one last picture at the June wedding of April Hartley and Michael Wolber. The photo showed an Oregon wildfire erupting a few miles away in the background.

The next day he posted it on Instagram, and after going viral, it was the shot seen round the world.
